Jeju Island Family

Jeju Island Family Tour

Post Gathering Tour: August 6 – 9th, 2007
Detailed program 4-day tour Jeju Island

South Korea’s largest and most Southern island is blessed with scenic beaches, waterfalls, rocky coastlines and lava caves. The island has a lot to offer; activities such as hiking, cycling and diving or simply relaxing on one of the sandy beaches. Colourful flowers and plants cover the island, the subtropical climate is perfect for tangerine trees. Because of its relative isolation, the people of Jeju have developed a unique culture.

How do we travel?
During day time we have excursions, but you are free to join. We do not start the day too early, and if the groups are big enough, we can split an arrange an early and late morning bus. In the evening we will organize a barbecue and social events, probably on the beach. Your hotel is the Oriental Hotel, a luxurious 5-star hotel along the shore of Jeju city, the capital of the island, with abundant possibilities to enjoy summer nightlife. Depending on the number of participants there will be at least one tour guide from Shilla Travel and some volunteer guides. It is free to choose your own restaurants, Shilla Travel makes recommendations and reservations if needed.

Day 1: Monday 6 August: Island Tour
From Seoul we take the plane to the largest and most southern island of Korea, Jeju. We explore the country by bus, visiting the waterfalls, the beautiful coast and one of Korea's finest Buddhist
Temples: the Yakcheonsa. For dinner we can eat in one of many restaurants close to the hotel. Nightlife on Jeju is fun, plenty of possibilities to explore this!

Day 2: Tuesday 7 August: Udo and the diving women
Udo Island is situation on the east coast of the main island Jeju. Here the local people still live the lives of their ancestors. A very distinct aspect of Jeju culture is the matriarchal family structure; this means that women earn the money instead of men. Well-known examples are the diving women called haenyo. These women earn their living collecting shell fish, squid and all kinds of different products of the sea. They dive to great depths without any scuba gear and they are the providers of the family. However, this profession will soon disappear because the younger generation is not prepared to do this hard job.

The landscape of Udo is marvellous and you can spent hours exploring the island by bike or scooter or just enjoy the white beaches. After Udo we visit the volcanic crater Ilchulbong. This prehistoric crater is attached to Jeju Island like a peninsula. You can climb to the top of the crater and enjoy the magnificent view on the island.

Day 3: Wednesday 8 August: Free day
Today you can do some light hiking along the stunning southern coast or do some serious climbing on Mount Hallasan (1950 meters high). Fishing and diving are possible near our hotel. Several markets are also in the vicinity of our hotel. A huge soccer arena has been built in the city of Seogwipo for the World Cup 2002. The city has 90.000 inhabitants, the stadium (with a fantastic sea view) has 45.000 seats!

Day 4: Thursday 9 August: Last day
On the last day you have time to shop, relax or do some individual sightseeing. Shilla Travel provides you all the necessary information. In the afternoon we take the bus back to the airport.
